"Master Chef" Kicks Off on FOX in the US

Chef Gordon Ramsay kicked off Master Chef on Fox this week for the US. The show appears to be much more calm than Hell's Kitchen. These people are all amateur cooks so it's good to see Ramsay not calling them "donkeys" in the first week at least.

The prize: $250,000 and a published cook book deal

Master Chef is sort of like American Idol for cooks, without the popularity contest. Of course, you still have to get along with Ramsay and the other two judges, Graham Elliot and Joe Bastianich. That may prove a bigger problem as the weeks continue.

This week showed the first few advancing in the cooking competition. You can catch the commercial free replay here.

We were also sadly introduced to "funeral potatoes"... and that's where you'd be headed if you ate them regularly. Floating in butter, literally.

There were a few with great potential and a few with the now required sad back story. What I do like about these types of shows is that they do teach people a life skill. Not a bad thing if we have to have reality TV. For some on Master Chef, "...once upon a time starts right now."

Catch Master Chef on Tuesdays at 9/8cst on FOX.
