Her full interview on 60 Minutes can be seen here. *warning: parts of the Lara Logan interview are graphic*
To say Logan was assaulted is an understatement. She was brutalized nearly to death, both physically and sexually. It happened right there in the streets during what started out as a celebration of freedom. The 60 Minutes crew were making their way through the mob to find safe place to film the chaos. It was an interpreter that reportedly alerted the security guard to the threats on Logan.
Logan said the mob was literally trying to rip her body apart once they got her away from the male body guards and 60 Minutes producer and crew. Her life was in serious danger as she said the mob grabbed at her hair and tried to pull it out by the scalp in chunks. It got worse as she reported the hands of so many men grabbing and sexually assaulting her. She was being pulled in all directions, and all of her clothes had been ripped off of her.
Crying at times, Logan told of nearly the entire attack. She said she thought she was going to die at one point, then thought how mad she became that she didn’t fight back harder. She wanted to live for her two young children and not die in the streets not having fought for her life.
“I can’t believe that I just let them kill me, that that was as much fight as I had,…and I just gave up on my children so easily, how could you do that?” Logan thought, then realized it was now about staying alive. She endured sexual assaults and beatings for 25 minutes as the group dragged her along a road.
When the mob was stopped by a fence, Logan literally fell into the lap of an Egyptian woman sitting in a camp of other women. The woman covered her over and sent for help from soldiers. The other women stood up to keep back the mob of men bent on killing Logan now. A group of soldiers fought the crowd with clubs to get to her then one threw her over his shoulder and they fought their way back.
Lara Logan has two young children who gave her the will to live through the ordeal. She is a strong woman. It was a very intense interview with only the occasional awkward question.
Scott Pelley did well to sit, looking uncomfortable and emotional, and allow Logan to retell the horrific story in great detail. It’s one thing to report on a victim, it’s different when the victim is a friend or co-worker.
