YouTube, Hulu and Google TV: Ditch the Cable Bill

Part of the Z-A in May Blog Challenge

I've said it since starting this blog on network TV shows, there's no reason to pay the cable company anymore. There are so many entertainment outlets today that if you have a computer and are paying for satellite or cable TV you have too much money. We can now find all of our favorite TV shows for free online if we miss them at their regular air time.

YouTube is the easiest place to find clips or segments of your favorite TV shows immediately after they air. Keep in mind that they may (and often do) violate the terms of the shows, so they are usually removed quickly. However, if you just missed the end of an episode it's a great place to get caught up fast. Just search under the options at the top left for today's uploads to narrow it down to the most relevant videos.

Hulu.com is the best place to find recent and old full episodes of missed TV shows. You do have to wait a few days usually for the newest episodes to be uploaded though. That's really the only drawback to Hulu.com. What makes them great is that you can stay up to date on most of your cable TV favorites too. There are also easy ways to narrow down your search efforts on Hulu; all are pretty self explanatory on the site.

Keep in mind that after a few days you can catch almost any episode of a TV show on its home network pages for free.

Google TV has now joined the dog pack, and may be the final blow to cable television companies as we know them. Not a network for watching episodes, Google TV turns your television into a computer so you can literally watch anything you want that's online or on TV. We are no longer a captive to a small computer screen when catching up on shows we missed. With Google TV plugged in to the new televisions on the market we can watch shows on Hulu or the network websites anytime on the larger screens.

Join me in the ban against the cable bill and start watching all the shows you've missed online for free. Your piggy bank will thank you too! Imagine having an extra $50-100 per month for other things. If you pay for DSL, it's essentially double paying for TV service.

So, are you ready to give the cable guy the boot? How high are your monthly cable or satellite bills? Would your family revolt against losing cable in your home?

  2. I almost got rid of the cable, but my husband chickened out. lol Since I have gaming consoles, I stream Netflix instantly on them. Hulu Plus is also available, but I haven't tried it out yet. I don't watch much TV anyway.

  3. I'm not a huge T.V. watcher, but what I do want to watch isn't on basic cable or satellite, meaning we have to pay out the wazoo to watch T.V. Not going to do it any more. Netflix and Hulu are my new best friends.

  5. Sorry for any confusion, I was using Hulu as an example in the last statement. I don't know if they have come to an agreement yet, I was just pointing out that eventually we will have access to most shows for the cost of DSL (basically).
