Biggest shocker in the history of American Idol. Guess what happened!
Tonight is the night we have all been waiting for. Well, if you are an Idol fan that is, or if you have a tween in the house. The total votes were announced early by Ryan Seacrest... close to 100 million last night and 624 million for the season.
The introduction of the AI judges was a fun one with a video clip of why we... um, love (?) them.
As more sound problems plague the live Idol finale, we miss the opening statements of the two finalists. Seriously, spend some money on a band and techs. A quick visit to the finalists home towns. Kris Allen's hometown of Conway, AK had a mighty crowd. Adam Lambert had a huge crowd too right there in CA.
First up was a performance from the Season 8 top 13. Pink's "I Wanna Start a Fight". It was the usual Idol group performance. Dressed all in white, the top 13 managed to mix Scott MacIntyre in well.
David Cook returned again to the Idol stage. All the proceeds from tonight's David Cook performance on ITunes will go to a cancer charity. Cook's older brother very recently died of brain cancer.
Now we come to the funny/mean part of the American Idol finale. The Golden Idol Awards. The handing out of a cheap made up trophy for the worst auditions of the season. They would be strictly funny, but these folks are serious. It brings it back to funny because they actually show up to accept the 'award'.
Norman Gentle was in the award category this year. Um, didn't he get pretty far? Yes, Nick Mitchell/Norman Gentle was the winner. They had to include him in the finale somehow. He had a full performance. Simon Cowell loved every minute of it. You cannot help but laugh at Nick Mitchell. He worked the audience like a pro. Norman Gentle left the stage with "Norman Gentle '09 Peace Out". He is going to be famous.
Lil Rounds returned with her post Idol performance. Queen Latifah joined Lil on stage. Now that was impressive. Lil seemed to have gotten her mojo back.
Anoop Desai started off the next group song with Alexis Grace. Both good singers were met by Jason Mraz, and the rest of the top 13.
Next up was the anthology of Kris Allen. Showing how humble Kris has been since the first audition in Louisville, KY. It would be truly amazing if Kris won tonight. Kris Allen and Keith Urban joined forces for the next song. Country music so wants a piece of American Idol. Kris Allen looked completely comfortable with Keith Urban. I could see Kris on the country charts.
Back for another group performance. This time highlighting the ladies of the top 13. The were a gorgeous group as usually. Fergie stepped out to join them. Megan Joy Corkrey also got to show off her pipes again. Then out stepped the Black-eyed Peas. They had the coolest back-up dancers, I'll give them that. I think the sound finally kicked in at the end of the song for the performers.
How could we be complete without a return appearance of 'bikini girl', Patrina Darrow. Up for a Golden Idol Award. Katrina Darrow came out in a skimpy little thing like they wanted and kissed Ryan on the lips..."and he kissed back this time". Showing off her obvious boob job, Ryan Seacrest said "I was going to ask you what's new, but I think I already know." She then graced us with a horrible version of a Kara DioGuardi song. Kara came out and sang with her to prove her wrong after their 'cat fight'. Both are just awefull.
Allison Iraheta teamed up with Cyndi Lauper for "Time After Time". Cyndi Lauper looked really good. Of course she does. This was a nice performance by both of them. Allison got into it and really seemed to jam at the end. Both were seated, Lauper on the sitar.
Danny Gokey got his turn next. "Hello" was a good fit for Danny. Danny then introduced the great Lionel Ritchie. It was obvious that Danny was star-struck by singing with Ritchie. Lionel Ritchie was awesome as always.
Going for a visit with Adam Lambert is like a whirlwind trip. Adam said getting to end of American Idol "was like a period to a sentence." Lambert came out in an extreme leather outfit singing..."Beth"...could it be? OMG....KISS is on the American Idol stage. I truly believe that only Adam's voice (and Simon's millions) could bring back KISS in full band and make-up. A true resurection.
Carlos Santana was the next major star to grace the Idol stage. Very nice, Carlos actually deserves the attention. Again with the sound problems. The Idol group of 13 came out to do a Santans medley.
A surprise for me was Steve Martin. Performing with Michael Sarver and Megan Joy Corkrey. I bet Martin appreciated Megan Joy's quirky voice in his folk music. Martin played banjo behind the two. "Pretty Flowers" was the tune. Steve Martin said he hoped that he wins tonight. Well people now know you have a new CD out, so.....
Rod Stewart was even willing to jump on the Idol bandwagon tonight. We are gonna run out of stars. Cue the music for Maggie. Sounding, um not good. This was the worst...ever. No more to say.
The last Golden Idol of the evening went to Outstanding Female (who couldn't sing), and the winner is... Tattiana Del Toro. There was a whole set up for her which included Ryan Seacrest chasing her and security escorting her out. Hopefully for the last time.
A song from the finalists. "We Are the Champions", obviously chosen for Adam's voice to carry. Poor Kris was completely drowned out. Then the entire band from Queen joined the rest of the Season 8 finalists on stage. Now that was redemption. They sounded awesome!
Finally we have an annoucement from Ryan Seacrest. Dim the lights... the Season 8 American Idol is.... KRIS ALLEN!!!
The shocker of all American Idol finales. This is the biggest misstep of them all. Well it (sort of) proves the producers aren't rigging the outcome. Good luck to Adam Lambert and Kris Allen.
