Just for filler, Idol producers gave us duets tonight too. Yay. So, mixed in with the regular top six performances we saw: Haley Reinhart and Casey Abrams, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery, Jacob Lusk and a less than thrilled looking James Durbin.
Kenny “Baby Face” Edmonds joined with Jimmy Iovine to mentor the Idol hopefuls. He definitely pointed them in the right direction.
Jacob Lusk took on “Oh No, Not My Baby” first. He was dressed like Irkel meets Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His performance was good, but Jacob’s problem is not his voice. He became a diva before his time. I don’t think he can keep enough teens voting for him to the end.
Lauren Alaina sang “Where You Lead” to a young man from the audience she invited onto the stage stairs. Jimmy Iovine went so far as to bring in Miley Cyrus to meet Lauren this week. He must have really blown her confidence a few weeks ago with that comment. She made a strong come back tonight. Lauren has always sounded good, but there are thousands of good singers trying to get in the business. Tonight she did better at owning the song and the stage… and a 19 year old’s heart for a minute.
Ryan Seacrest asked his name, “Bret” responded the young man after the song. Ryan asked how old he was and he said he was 19. Ryan then pointed out “um, we have laws…” sometimes he’s just awkward.
After Haley and Casey’s duet (which was decent), Scotty McCreery came out with “You’ve Got a Friend.” Baby Face had a way of talking to these kids that really got through to them. He told Scotty not to over use his baritone, to work up to that but start out softer. He did and wow! Someone must have finally convinced Scotty that the creepy hold on the mic is no longer funny or endearing or even creepy, it’s just aggravating. He held it right and sang from his heart. This was Scotty McCreery’s best so far on Idol, I think.
James Durbin followed Scotty with “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” and it was definitely one of James’ best performances. I’m always surprised at how confident James Durbin is on the Idol stage. I don’t know why I expected him to be a little fearful and not nearly as musical as he’s turned out to be. Durbin is a great surprise for me, and tonight he pushed it even further. Steven Tyler said that was the “first song I ever made out with a girl to” after Durbin finished. Randy Jackson all but proclaimed James Durbin the winner of AI10, and went up to hug him on stage. Seen that already Randy.
Casey Abrams took the Idol stage, after the Lauren & Scotty duet of “Up on the Roof,” with his growling version of “Hi-De-Ho (That Old Sweet Roll).” It was very theatrical, but it was decent. I’m not the fan I once was, but I mean that as far as him winning Idol. I don’t think this is the place for Casey, but I do think he should get into the music industry ASAP.
Haley Reinhart has that rasp that should have given her a huge edge on Carole King week. She sang “Beautiful” and it was okay. There was nothing really special about it though. I think Haley has a big enough fan base to keep her there past Jacob Lusk, but she better start lighting up that stage.
Jacob and James’ duet of “I’m Into Something Good” was awkward from start to finish. You could see it in the less than enthusiastic start James Durbin gave. Even Steven Tyler could not give them praise.
It’s hard to pick a bottom three this week, but if you go by process of elimination I think Haley Reinhart, Jacob Lusk and Casey Abrams will fall there. My guess would be that Jacob Lusk will leave tomorrow night. Who do you think is going to leave American Idol 10 tomorrow night? Who did you like best tonight?
