American Idol 10: Paul McDonald Goes Home and Then There Were Seven

American Idol: 10th Anniversary - The Hits Volume 1More likely tonight’s latest eliminated American Idol contestant, Paul McDonald, will be exceptionally busy after his Idol Tour. I don’t see Paul slowing down one bit. In fact I think it would be cool to watch him at his own concert. Either way, Idol was great exposure for his eclectic voice.

The duets were back tonight, and not just for the Idol kids. More on that later. The Idol hopefuls grouped as: Lauren Alaina & Scotty McCreery, Haley Reinhart & Casey Abrams. Then the quartet of guys: Paul McDonald, Jacob Lusk, Stefano Langone and James Durbin. All sounded really good in their groups. Idol producers need to stick with this format.

We knew Scotty and Lauren Alaina would sound amazing singing a Lady Antebellum The shocker was how good Haley Reinhart and Casey Abrams sounded once they got going. Haley actually out sang Casey for most of the song, but when they got to the scat they were both really good. This was the best performance for both of them.

It was not a big shocker when Ryan pronounced Scotty and Lauren both safe in the top seven. It was a toss up for me as to whether Haley or Casey would end up in the bottom three, we knew one was going there. It was Haley Reinhart who was first sent to the bottom three tonight. Casey Abrams was safe after his unique performance last night.

For some reason Rob Reiner showed up on set to give the Idol hopefuls some advice. Not sure why we had to watch, there was not much happening there.

Out came Jason Aldean teamed with Kelly Clarkson for a powerful duet. They really blew me away singing “Don’t You Wanna Stay” I wish the band sounded this good every night on Idol.

The all male quartet of Durbin, McDonald, Langone and Lusk took the stage and did a good job on “Sound of Silence” and “Mrs. Robinson.” Their voices really gelled well on the acoustic plays.  Ryan called them to the center of the stage after they finished. James Durbin was pronounced safe. Stefano was the second one to take a walk to the stools o’ shame in the bottom three.

Jacob Lusk redeemed himself this week and earned his seat in the top seven of AI season 10, leaving Paul McDonald to join the bottom three. We know what happened from there. But first… a performance from Rihanna. She was beautiful, of course, and she sounded good too. At least until she attempted a conversation with Ryan afterward. She sounded a little scattered talking about a new feature in her concerts.

Finally it was time, and Ryan called out the bottom three. Haley Reinhart was the first one sent to safety. Stefano Langone got to hear some gasps again as Paul McDonald was pronounce out of the Idol competition tonight. Poor Stefano, it will be your turn soon. I hope anyway. Not that Stefano is bad, but..well, you know my feelings.

So what did you think of Paul McDonald getting eliminated tonight on American Idol? Don’t be upset, just remember to vote for your favorite. My guess is that it may come down to Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina now *yawn*. Both are good, but for some reason they bore me.
