Scotty McCreery - “Swingin’” by Leann Rimes
The other contestants made fun of the way Scotty holds the microphone. He did not pay any attention to them… I wish he would. The T-Rex arms are really getting on my nerves. This was a boring song choice for Scotty and he did little to spice it up. He did walk around the stage more, and brought out his deep tenor, but it was still very boring. I think he has a big enough fan base to keep him safe. If they vote, that is.
James Durbin - “Uprising” by Muse
The ribbing from the others came for James Durbin’s scarf tail and backbends he does while screaming. Hey, that’s just rock and roll. You know Steven Tyler is dying to raid Durbin’s closet. Tonight James entered from the back of the theater…with drummers in tow. Though he was hard to hear on his beginning lower registers, James brought the heat by the middle of the song. He was challenged, according to Randy Jackson, to take the second verse up an octave. Durbin obliged happily. True metal fans and fans of the big hair bands of the 80’s are loving James Durbin. I’m just not sure there are enough of us voting to keep him there till the end.
Steven Tyler said of Durbin’s style, “Mad Max meets storm troopers on Melrose! It’s expensive to look this cheap!”
Haley Reinhart - “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele
The group seemed a little harsh on Haley, maybe she deserved it. They do have to live together for now. The other Idol hopefuls didn’t seem as playful when discussing her though. Anyway, she sang a song I’ve not heard (I know I’m the only one), and I actually liked it. The buzz on Twitter was mixed. True Adele fans seemed to not like it as much, but that means she wasn’t a sound alike. I thought it was maybe Haley’s best vocal performance yet. Only her duet with Casey last week was better. She stayed in one place on the Idol stage this week and I think that helped her vocally. The judges seemed unusually harsh on Reinhart.
Jacob Lusk - “Dance With My Father” by Luther Vandross
The others in the AI house used the word “Diva” to describe Jacob… shocker! He loved it and expected it. Tonight was emotional for Jacob as he dedicated the song to his father who died when he was 12, and to all those without a dad. Sadly for Jacob there was a drum track playing in his earpiece (according to him after the song), and he lost his words early. He pulled the earpiece out and carried on without losing much of a beat. By the middle of the song Jacob was full on giving it all he had and ended it well. Then Randy told him he needed to stop holding back. Seriously? I think maybe pick it up a little, with a little faster song, but do not sing bigger Jacob, please.
Casey Abrams - “Harder To Breathe” by Maroon 5
So they gave the other Idol housemates a fake Amish beard to do their tease segment. It was pretty funny. Most had Casey standing there with a dirty look on his face ready to chase them down for any insults. I was worried about this song choice for Abrams. It seemed a little weird, but I forgot how weird Casey is. He brought out the guitar (not bass) and lumber jacked all over the Idol stage. The vocals were not his best, but the entertainment and energy was the highest he’s had live. The last line of the song he sang right in Jennifer Lopez’s face, literally. She turned her head and he ended it by giving her a kiss on the cheek.
Jlo said Casey wasn’t playing fair and that he had “soft lips.” Steven Tyler said, “You just did something I’ve been trying to do for four months!”
Tyler also said to Casey Abrams, “You pissed a lot of people because you’re so *bleep* talented!” Then he said it a few more times for emphasis. When Idol returned after commercials Tyler had duck tape over his mouth. He immediately removed it.
Stefano Langone - “Closer” by Ne-yo
The rest of the crew made fun of Stefano’s ladies man ways. The fact that he looks like Joey Tribiani just makes it worse. Now all I hear when I see Stefano is “how you doin’?” Jimmy Iovine hit the nail on the head when he attacked Stefano’s stage presence. Iovine said Stefano tends to plead with his body for “love” when he sings. That’s exactly the body language he uses. Jimmy told Stefano to strut and move, dance, whatever, but don’t beg. He took it to heart. Tonight was not even close to great vocally, but Stefano did look a lot better on stage and in the crowd.
Lauren Alaina - “Born To Fly” by Sara Evans
The rest of the Idol kids had plenty of fuel for teasing Lauren Alaina. The bubbly teen likes to talk and apparently didn’t know she had a southern accent. Later Jimmy Iovine told us he only told Alaina that she sings better than Miley Cyrus last week to give her confidence (it’s true though). This week Iovine brought in Rock Mafia, Cyrus’ producers, to hear Alaina sing in practice. Sure enough, she lost her confidence in front of them. Something has definitely changed in Lauren Alaina. She’s still bubbly, but she’s not carrying any emotion on stage. She is not reaching for any notes and is playing it more safe as the weeks go by. She’ll likely stay in the competition this week, but Lauren needs to step it up in the coming weeks on American Idol.
I’ll have the videos up from tonight as soon as they are legally available. Who do you think did the best tonight on AI? Who do you think will be in the bottom three tomorrow night?
