Hell’s Kitchen Season 8: Russel Vs. Nona in the Finals

15 Chefs CompeteChef Ramsay opened this episode of Hell’s Kitchen by saying two would go home, after last week’s reprieve from firing. After each took a turn at the pass during dinner service it was quite clear that one of the chefs was out of his league. Chef Ramsay called out Trev first and let him go without asking him questions. Jillian was the second contestant put out of the running for Hell’s Kitchen season 8, though Chef made it clear she was not fired. He let Jillian keep her chef’s jacket and gave her a hug and peck on the cheek. Can I lose Hell’s Kitchen next? Please?

Here’s how the night went:
The final four were asked to create a fusion dish. They pulled flags from under plates to find out their combos.
Nona: Greece & Italy
Jillian: Thailand & Spain
Russell: France & India
Trev: China & Mexico
Russell was cocky, as usual. Jillian was fearful, as usual. Trevor was lost..well, you get it. Nona seemed to be under control. The contestants were judged by: Philip Dubose, Helene An and Lee Hefter.

No one, including Russell (gasp!), could get the seasoning right. All were told their dishes were bland. All, until Jillian that is... yep, Jillian’s dish was a unanomous hit with the judges. She looked surprised... wait, she always looks surprised. For a reward, Jillian was whisked off to lunch with Gordan Ramsay in a limo. “I have to wear my tall girl boots!”, squealed Jillian as she ran to get ready.

The other three were off to clean the dorms. Trev whined, Russell grunted and Nona was not seen for the most part. As they prepped for dinner service Trev and Russell argued like eight year olds while Nona welcomed Jillian back.

At dinner service Chef Ramsay announced all four would take a turn at the hot plate running the kitchen. Russell was called up first. He seemed to have things under control. Chef Scott sabotaged his truffle salad (pecans for walnuts), Russell found it.

Nona took over at the pass and seemed as confident and comfortable as Russell. I was a little surprised that she did so well. Her pallet let her down when Chef Scott subbed celery root for mashed potatoes. Even when Chef Ramsay told her to taste it again she swore it was potatoes. This does not bode well for Nona in the Hell’s Kitchen finals.

Trev took his turn and it was obvious that he had no respect from the others. He had so little, in fact, that they disrespected Chef Ramsay by totally ignoring Trev. No one would answer him. Never heard such a quiet group in Hell’s Kitchen. Chef Ramsay finally had to scream at them to snap them back to reality.

Jillian was a screamer in the lead. It’s good to be vocal, but she was really shrill. Trev had a meltdown trying to make halibut, bringing the kitchen to a grinding halt. Jillian, nearly hoarse from screaming and close to frustrated tears, turned to Chef Ramsay for assistance. Trev got the first, “Come here you...” of the night in Hell’s Kitchen.

After the dinner service was completed, Chef Ramsay called the final four to the front for the final decisions. First he said had become apparent that “one of you is not ready... Trev, take your jacket off big man. You fought against all odds and your dedication never waivered.” Nice words from Chef Ramsay.

All three remaining contestants jumped as three huge Hell’s Kitchen banners fell down behind Chef Ramsay. He then asked them each to state their case for being in the season 8 finals. Both ladies made impassioned pleas, Russell may as well have just said, “because I said so.”

The first person into the Hell’s Kitchen season 8 finals is Russell. It had to happen, but still... ugh. Hopefully his cockiness will let him down sooner than later. Nona was named to go against Russell for the position of Head Chef at the LA Market. The winner also gets $250,000 as pay for the year of work.

I guarantee Nona would be easier to train than Russell. Not sure Nona could keep up with the pace of a nightly high end dinner service though. At least Russell has experience in high end dining. Next week the previous players will return to play on teams for each of the final two. It’s always an interesting, drama filled reunion.

  1. I want Russell to go - his uber confidence and cockyness gets really tiring. I like Jillian, even if she is a bit lacking in confidence - at least you feel she is genuine.

  2. I'm with you on that, Nancy! lol Russell's attitude is just awful and may well just take him out of winning it. He's never talked back to Chef though, and he's only been screamed at a couple of times, so I don't know. I hope for a Nona win!
    Thanks for the comment!
