Criminal Minds Returns With New Episodes

Is this CBS drama getting softer?

The hit CBS drama Criminal minds is back with all new episodes, but are they as hard hitting as the originals? I was disappointed with the first new episode that aired Wednesday (4/02/08) night.

Agent Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) is still heading the FBI team, and looking hotter than ever. In this episode, we learn that his wife (who left and took their child) wants an uncontested divorce. This is the only soap-like part of the show, and doesn't matter to the show other than to show why an FBI Agent may react a certain way. The stress of this decision ends up putting Agent Hotchner and Agent Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) in a locked cell with a mass murderer.

We did get to see the conclusion of the case that has haunted Agent Rossi (Joe Mantegna) for the last 20 years. This is the one character on the show that I think seems misplaced, or poorly written.

Agent Rossi joined the team in the BAU after the retirement of Agent Gideon (Mandy Pantinken). While I think it was time to retire Agent Gideon
, the Rossi character seems forced.

While all of the characters are uber-dramatic, the show demands no less, Rossi looks like he wants to hit someone (all the time).

At the end, we saw the promise of a smile and a light-hearted ending. Criminal Minds is still a great show, I want to go back to when it actually scared me though.
