American Idol Season 8: Bikini Girl & Cat Fights

American Idol Gives Out 27 Golden
Tickets in Phoenix, AZ
Jan 13/2009 Tuesday 8/7c FOX

It's finally that time of year again! It actually seems like it's been a while since David Cook was named the last American Idol. I don't know that he is the rocket they were expecting, but whatever, it's a whole new season...

American Idol kicked off in Phoenix, AZ this year, with the usual suspects (good, bad and tone deaf). There did not seem to be as many excruciating auditions to listen to in the 2 hour season premier. At the end of the show, the judges (including new addition Kara Diogardi) gave 27 American Idol hopefuls their Golden Ticket to Hollywood!

Before we go any further, let's look at the judges: Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, and this years addition Kara
DioGuardi.

I felt bad (read old) at first for not knowing who Kara
DioGuardi is, but a short segment on tonight's episode showed many others do not know her either. Anyway, she seems to be a feisty addition to the slightly bland/drunk panel.

At one point the show lost all class with a contestant that will go down in history known only as 'Bikini Girl'. OK, her name was Katrina Darrell or something like that. I think she sang too. She appeared to be quite comfortable in her own...um...skin. And since that was just about all she was wearing, that was good. A singer she is not, but Simon and Randy insisted on seeing more...this sparked the cat (kitten) fight since Kara and Paula were not impressed by Bikini Girl's voice/soulfulness. Kara tried to out sing her and Bikini Girl said it was not as good as her's. Oh no she didn't... Paula started throwing papers. The boys won out with a 2-2 tie, she gets a Golden Ticket. Oh, and she hunted down Ryan Seacrest and French kissed him like she promised! Well, at least we know where the Howard Stern vote will be.

On to the American Idol Season 8 talent!

Emily Hughes is the rocker girl this season. She has a great voice and comes out of a successful local band. She will be around in the Top 20.

Deanna Brown sounded just like Kelly Pickler when she spoke, but has a sort of Macy Gray tone that is very cool. She did not look very fierce, so I hope she has the courage to get through the Hollywood week.

Alex Wagner-Trugman will most likely not make it to the Top 20. He reminds me of a nerdy Clay Aiken, yep, pretty nerdy. I loved his dry sense of humor though and I really enjoyed his voice, so I hope he goes far and show Simon up!

Scott MacIntyre will be in the Top 20 almost guaranteed. Not sure how they will work around the group performances, but he is loaded with talent so it will work out. Scott is blind and has a cane and a guide with him. He is very serious about this competition.

There you have my short list of ones to watch from the first night of American Idol: Season 8. We continue the quest tomorrow night at 8/7c on FOX.
