SYTYCD Week 3: 6/24/2009

First up tonight on SYTYCD is:

Karla & Jonathan: Hip Hop (by Dave Scott) Music: "By My Side" by Jadakiss/Neyo
This was not good at all. Jonathan was not nearly gangsta enough. It was a thoroughly boring show opener. There was no connection between the dancers at all. Nigel Lythgoe really let them have it for the bubble gum routine. Nigel offered bets to the audience that they would be in the bottom 3.

Asuka & Vitolio: Jazz (by Mandy Moore) Music: "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benetar
I did not think it could get much worse after the slow opener. I was sadly mistaken. This was the worst routine I've seen on SYTYCD. Even the ending was off by seconds. This was just not good at all. Nigel Lythgoe really liked it for some reason. Mary Murphy finally called the couple on their timing issues throughout the performance.

Ade & Melissa: Rumba (by Tony Meredith) Music: "Emotion" by Destiny's Child
Melissa had on a very weird dress, that was really more distracting. The routine seemed to stop and go in a jerky fashion. Not smooth at all. Nigel loved this routine too saying, "What a difference Ade makes."

Jeanette & Brandon: Hip Hop (by Dave Scott) Music: "What a World" by Common
At last we got some action. The routine started slow, but really hit a stride in the middle. Brandon Bryant can dance! He did the walk-up like last year's SYTYCD winner Joshua, not quite as strong. Nigel was impressed with Brandon's hip hop, coming from contemporary.

Kayla & Kupono: Veinese Waltz (by Jeane Marc) Music: "Sweet Dreams For You" by Jewel
The new couple have a good look together. Kupono worried in rehearsal that he lacked the upper body strength for the lifts. It looked good. Not great, but not bad. Nigel Lythgoe showed his appreciation for the fluidity of the movement, but said that the dance will not make a crowd cheer.

1-888-TEMPO 05

Randi & Evan: Contemporary (by Mia Michaels) Music: "Koop Island Blues" by Koop
This was too simple. It was boring. It was jazz. Randi followed the rest of the ladies with almost nothing on. Nigel Lythgoe loved it and really really loved Randi's butt.................... Mary Murphy also enjoyed the dance immensely and screamed to deafen Nigel.

1-888-TEMPO 06

Caitlyn & Jason: Pasa Doble (by Jean Marc) Music: O' Fortuna
Jason did not do well staying in character. Caitlyn, not so much either. The steps did not look slean at all. The timing was slightly off. The dance looked slow to the commanding music. Nigel Lythgoe said the two did not connect well, and he was absolutely right. There was no eye contact between the two. Mary Murphy commented on Jason losing his shoulder strength.

1-888-TEMPO 07

Jeanine & Phillip: Broadway (by Tyce Diorio) Music: Moses
Now this was a fun Broadway routine. Finally a routine that was choreographed to the style they drew. Phillip Chbeeb jumped a 6.5 ft couch (and split his pants during the routine). Nigel Lythgoe noticed Phillip's 'air conditioning'. He then told Phillip that it was time to grow, but Jeanine was on fire. It was a fun routine.

1-888-TEMPO 08

Well that was a less than stellar night for SYTYCD. I think Karla and Jonathan are in trouble tomorrow night. Based on tonight though, anything can happen, no one was hugely impressive. My favorite of the night was the hip hop of Jeanette and Brandon. Jeanine and Phillip closed the show well too.
