Amazing Race 17: Chad & Stephanie Are Off TAR to Find... True Love?

Tonight was an intense episode of the Amazing Race 17. With teams flying to Bangladesh, Chad & Stephanie awoke on time and started first. Jill & Thomas were right on their heels. The new twist for Amazing Race 17 is the Double U-turn in this leg. Two teams would be slowed down with an extra task, and Chad & Stephanie said they would U-turn Nat & Kat if given the chance. They didn’t. Instead, it was Chad & Stephanie who went from first to last place tonight after suffering one of the U-turns. Buh-bye to these lovebirds.

Here is how this leg of Amazing Race 17 went down:

Teams headed to the airport first to race for the best flights to Bangladesh. It usually just comes down to luck and timing. This group seems the weakest (or most willing to give up) at finding better flights.

Tonight Jill & Thomas arrived with Chad & Stephanie and Brook & Claire at the airport. All three teams booked the same basic flight, and Chad & Stephanie went to eat. Jill & Thomas went to find better flights, and Brook & Claire hemmed and hawed over what to do as other teams started to arrive. Then it happened. Jill & Thomas booked a flight that would arrive several hours before their original flight.

Brook & Claire and Nick & Vicki started scrambling for another early flight. Nick & Vicki managed to book just before Team HSN, leaving Brook & Claire to fly out with Chad & Stephanie (still eating and oblivious to the entire scramble).

Nat & Kat started in last place and were way behind at the airport. They took a different route from the other teams, but wound up joining Chad & Stephanie and Brooke & Claire by the time the flights touchdown in Bangladesh. The battle was on for these three teams, it was obvious one was going home tonight.

Once teams landed, they had to head to the first task. Each team had to squeeze a full jug of juice out of what looked like bamboo stalks. One team member then had to drink an entire glass of the juice. It looked kind of nasty but not terrible. Jill & Thomas arrived hours before the others and knocked it right out.

Nick & Vicki hit the juice stand next and we could see Nick was headed for another meltdown. Yelling at Vicki early and often, not sure how this team has made it this far. They had plenty of time and did not lose any, despite Nicks whining.

The first two teams were off (though far apart in time from each other) to the Detour. This leg teams had to choose from “Balanced Meal” or “Balanced Bricks”. In Balanced Meal, teams would have to get and deliver 30 food containers to a boat, and bring back ten empties. In Balanced Bricks teams had to move 100 bricks from one place to another in balanced baskets on their heads.

Jill & Thomas were the only team to choose Balanced Bricks. It appeared to be much harder than the other task, so it was lucky they had such a big lead. They got through it without any problems and headed for the double U-turn.

I was a bit surprised when Jill & Thomas chose to U-turn Brook & Claire. They must not have realized it was Nick & Vicki who were creeping up on them. Of course, who would think that of Team Tattoo.

Nick & Vicki got to the U-turn next and Vicki talked Nick out of using it on Chad & Stephanie. He was ready to stick their faces on the board when she settled him down (and made him a little more pout-y). Vicki felt there was no reason to use it this leg. She turned out to be right.

Nat & Kat got to the Detour next and got a big head start on Balanced Diet. By the time Brook & Claire got on the boat to deliver the canisters Nat & Kat were nearly finished. Chad & Stephanie got lost on the way to the Detour, and the kind sounds of Chad sniping was not going over well with the locals. Finally they found the place to start the task and caught up with Brook & Claire.

Nat & Kat finished and headed to the U-turn with only a slight lead. They saw the opportunity and chose to U-turn Chad & Stephanie. Ha! Now all things were equal with both Brook & Claire and Chad & Stephanie having to go back and do the Balanced Bricks task before heading to the next clue.

Brook & Claire took the news like women, at least in the beginning. They headed quickly for the brick task. Got there and got a good head start. Chad & Stephanie... got lost looking for the U-turn box, seriously. When they found it, they headed half-heartedly to the brick task.

Teams then had to take a rickshaw to the Roadblock. One team member had to assemble a rickshaw by themselves while their teammate cheered them on, or not.

Jill finished the task fairly quickly. The chain seemed to be the thing that tripped up most teams on this task. Jill & Thomas headed for the Pit Stop far in the lead tonight. It may have been the most one sided leg in the history of the Amazing Race. There  had to of been a lot of creative editing going on.

Nick put together the rickshaw for Team Tattoo. It went basically without a hitch. No surprise there. The team headed off rather quickly to the Pit Stop.

Nat did the Roadblock for Team Docs, and things hit a snag. The other two teams caught up just as Nat was getting frustrated. Chad decided to take the low road (Surprise!), and began taunting the doctors for using the U-turn. Chad was yelling nasty things at Nat about her PhD not working for her in this task. She corrected him later (after he was gone), that she has an MD not a PhD. Either way, she’s still in the race, Chad.

Brook & Claire had their first meltdown/fight tonight. It was a kitten fight. Apparently Brook is the more physically fit of the two and it’s starting to wear on Claire. Though Claire whined for a while, she got through it. Claire did the Roadblock and got off to a good start. She struggled a little, but finally got the rickshaw together just ahead of Stephanie.

Chad, now with no one to yell at but Stephanie, did just that. The two seemed to be right on the heels of Brook & Claire running to the Pit Stop. Brook & Claire entered from a bizarre place, again. Chad & Stephanie appeared to be lost, again. In the end, it was Brook & Claire that won the race to the mat tonight. Chad & Stephanie were the last team to arrive and are no longer on the Amazing Race 17.

Here is the way teams finished the Amazing Race 17 tonight:
1. Jill & Thomas *won a $15,000 Discover gift card ($7500 each)
2. Nick & Vicki (who’da thunk it?)
3. Nat & Kat
4. Brook & Claire
5. Chad & Stephanie *Eliminated tonight*

Any team can win this season on Amazing Race. Well, I would be shocked if Nick & Vicki did, but I guess it’s not impossible. I hope Nat & Kat or Brook & Claire win the Amazing Race 17. Which team are you backing this season?
