American Idol Season 10: Naima and Thia Go Home Together

American Idol: 10th Anniversary - The Hits Volume 1Ryan Seacrest opened the American Idol live elimination show by saying that we would not believe who would be leaving tonight. In a build up to a dramatic ending we saw a recap of last week’s dramatic ending (when Casey Abrams nearly passed out on stage). Tonight was nowhere close. Two Idol hopefuls did leave but there were no big surprises. Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia had their AI lights snuffed out… and my spell check thanks the American public for that.

In a pleasant surprise it seems Idol producers finally understand that these voices just don’t gel this season. They are all decent singers, but a very eclectic group. Instead of the usual painful group number we were blessed with duets and small groups instead.

First up were  Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina singing “I Told You So.“ These two country voices sounded like they were born to sing together and were definitely the bright singing spot of the elimination show. Seacrest called the two to center stage after they finished and pronounced both safely in the AI season 10 top nine. No surprises so far.

Another duet followed after the obligatory Ford commercials. Naima Adedapo and Jacob Lusk came together to sing “Solid.” Thankfully we won’t have to ever hear these two together again. It was not good. Both were called to center stage for results. Things seemed to be moving fast for an elimination night as Ryan told Jacob he was safe and Naima had to take the first stool o’ shame.

Fantasia made another Idol return with her latest song “Collard Greens and Cornbread” … yes, that’s really the name. Fantasia sounded like she had a big hit off a helium balloon backstage and sort of looked like she had a Wilma Flintstone hairdo going on, but that’s Fantasia. She does put her heart and soul into her songs. It was not bad. I’ll still take Jennifer Hudson over her any day though.

Next came the trio performance from Thia, Pia and Haley… oh how I wished they had a Mia on this season for this occasion. The three ladies sang “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry. Pia Toscano sounded great with an upbeat song. She should really, really try it when it counts. Thia did not even get a solo in the group. Her fate seemed obvious. Seacrest quickly told Pia and Haley Reinhart that they were safe. Thia had to take her seat next to Naima in the bottom three.

In a break from the eliminations, we got to see what happened after last week’s drama with the save of Casey Abrams. He looked so sick the Idol doc whisked him away after the show and had him lay down. Casey said he was so embarrassed because the judges saved him. He said he could not look anyone in the eye without crying, then he really did break down. At least he’s passionate, that’s what makes him so good.

The weirdest group number of all starred Paul McDonald on acoustic guitar, Casey Abrams on bass guitar, James Durbin on acoustic guitar and Stefano Langone on keyboard. Singing “Band on the Run” this group sounded like they were in a garage somewhere. It was less than stellar, yet still better than the Jamie Foxx / William (I refuse to spell it the stupid way, I may just call him Bill from now on) train wreck that followed.

When Ryan called the four guys out for the results he immediately pronounced Casey Abrams and James Durbin safe. The only shock (sort of) for the night was when Stefano was also sent to safety and Paul McDonald had to take his seat in the bottom three with Naima and Thia. I could see it happening though. Paul is a  love him or hate him kind of performer I think. I like him, but I doubt he’ll be there at the end.

For some reason Jamie Foxx decided to team up with the master of auto-tune William from B.E.P. It was so bad I thought Twitter was going to fly the FailWhale. The only saving grace was that the movie “Rio” from which the song comes doesn’t look that bad.

When the smoke cleared Seacrest finally called the bottom three to center stage. Paul McDonald was quickly told he was safe for another week. Thankfully there was no time left for any sobbing good-bye songs since there were two girls leaving. We got a recap of their Idol journeys instead. Thanks again producers!

What did you think of tonight’s live elimination show? Did the right two go home or were you ready to say good-bye to someone else?
