Lucky for Kevin and Michael the first non-elimination leg of this season’s Amazing Race came early. The father and son team will have to endure a speed bump on the next leg, but after coming in last tonight, they are still in The Amazing Race.
It seemed like another short leg tonight, with the teams remaining in Ghana from last week. Phil Keoghan explained as they checked in at the end that the teams would be staying to do some refurbishing on the school in Ghana the next day. A nice addition to the race, and the least we could do for running through their country (usually without so much as a thanks to a cab driver).
Here is how this leg of The Amazing Race went down:
Brook & Claire (Team HSN) started first as the winners of the last leg. Off to a boxing academy in Jamestown. Trivia: Boxing is the No. 2 sport in Ghana after soccer. The roadblock was to complete a boxing training camp exercise circuit. The girls started ahead, but quickly lost their lead to ... Connor & Jonathan (Team Glee), didn't see that coming!
After the boxing camp, teams had to grab two wheelbarrows filled with cement and materials and move on down the road. After delivering the cement, teams had to take part in a geography class, marking where Ghana is on a map of Africa. Sadly, it took most teams quite a while to figure this out, to the giggles of the students watching.
Connor and Jonathan cruised ahead to the Detour, either Bicycle Parts or Language Arts. In bicycle parts, teams had to each roll a bike rim with a stick across a soccer field and back. Sounds easy? NOT! In language arts, teams had to find symbols on a decoder map, then match them to a wall. Sounds tough, but Team Glee got right through it. The other teams all had to resort to the bicycle parts task when none could find the decoder map (a giant sign on a wall they all passed right by).
Surprisingly, Nick took Chad’s place in the a-hole awards for the night. Screaming at Vicki and everyone else throughout the tasks. Finally Vicki had an asthma attack and that seemed to settle Nick right down. Nick admitted he was being a dick. Chad once again stepped into the role of biggest a-hole... and all was right again.
The heat nearly overcame a few racers in Ghana. Most affected was Michael, of the father son team. He had trouble rolling the bike rim and had to stop for medical attention due to dehydration. They did finish the task though.
Here is how the teams placed in this non-elimination leg:
1. Connor & Jonathan
2. Mallory & Gary
3. Chad & Stephanie
4. Katie & Rachel
5. Nick & Vicki
6. Brook & Claire
7. Jill & Thomas
8. Nat & Kat
9. Michael & Kevin *speed bump next leg*
As winners of this leg, Connor & Jonathan won $5000 each. Hmm... no trip this time? This is the first time I remember there ever being a cash prize for winning a leg of The Amazing Race.
So, now that we have a few weeks down, who are you rooting for on The Amazing Race? I'm torn between Jonathan & Connor and Nat & Kat. Do you have a favorite yet? Leave a comment with you faves!

Love Vicki and Nick. They are down to earth, sincere and bestow upon their opponents compliments. that is extremely sportsman like and admirable.
ReplyDeleteI liked Vicki and Nick until last week when Nick went a little nuts. He got it back together by the end, but his comments to Vicki and others were unwarranted up to that point. Hopefully he doesn't have anymore meltdowns. (Leave those for Chad, lol)

Season 7 Leg 1 was the first time a cash prize was offered; $10,000 to each team member; this was also a prize for leg one of seasons 9 and 10.
ReplyDeleteLast Season during the Seychelles Leg, Steve and Ally (I believe......father daughter team) also won $7,000 that leg for coming in first
Hey, thanks for the clarification on the cash prizes for the Amazing Race. You must be quite a fan! I was not watching the show that far back, I have to admit, so I really appreciate you catching me up on those!
