After Fabio was named the winner of Survivor Nicaragua, the entire cast was reunited for the final hour. This is the time we often learn more about what was left on the editing room floor during the season, and why some votes went the way they did. Then there are the awkward times when we learn a little too much about the Survivor contestants. It’s always a fun show.Jeff Probst started with Fabio, asking him if the nickname has stuck. “You started out here as Judson. Has the new name stuck?” Jud told us that he is now Fabio, likely forever. Then we got to see a picture of Jud in his modeling days pre- Survivor Nicaragua. Yum! This was also the time when Fabio confessed to being from a family of artists. His father invented “something” and his grandfather designed the folding card table for Samsonite (I believe he said that company). No need for Jud to take care of his family, it appears.
Chase, the runner-up in the close final vote, was up next for questioning. Jeff Probst asked Chase about his appearing to be “wishy-washy” during Survivor Nicaragua. “I was...” answered Chase. He was also asked about his cuddle buddy Brenda. Are they a couple? Not so much. “We’re just good friends” answered Chase to the catcalls of “showmance”.
Sash, the third player in the finals of Survivor Nicaragua, was asked about his game play involving Brenda. Jeff Probst asked Sash if he considered giving her his Hidden Immunity Idol to keep her in the game. Brenda spoke up to say she had plotted against Sash the day that all played out, and had told her “good friend” (giving NaOnka a naughty grin), who ran and told Sash of her plan. Sash said after he found out about her plan, he could not give Brenda the Idol. This would have been good for us at home to know, Survivor producers. There was no reason to leave that in the editing room.
Probst admitted to telling Sash that he would be the first one voted out of any tribe he was a part of, with no explanation as to why he told him that. Probst apologized to Sash for having told him that. It must have been Sash’s sparkling personality that rubbed him wrong.
For some strange reason, Jeff Probst went back to Chase and asked him about his career in country music. Chase said he did not expect any extra attention from Nashville just for having been on Survivor Nicaragua. Probst handed Chase a guitar and told him to sing them into the break. I don’t think Chase has to worry about getting any more extra attention.
Jimmy Johnson came back to the reunion looking proud as all get out for having just survived his time on Survivor Nicaragua. He explained how big a fan he really is of the show. This was the former NFL coach’s third attempt at getting on. The first time he was turned away early. The second time he made it to the physical examination part. The Survivor doctors called him to say they’d love to have him, but he had two blocked arteries in his heart. “I guess you could say Survivor saved my life!” said the 67 year old sports announcer.
Jimmy Johnson brought his buddy Terry Bradshaw to the finale. Jeff Probst went to the audience to get Bradshaw’s opinion on Jimmy playing. “We thought he was nuts!” said the animated Terry Bradshaw. “I was really worried about his health... and doing this at his age...” Bradshaw continued. He made it clear that he did not think Johnson would have lasted any longer than he did on Survivor Nicaragua due to his health and age saying, “They got him off before he hurt himself.”
Holly was next up for questions from Probst. As soon as he started talking about Dan’s shoes, and the death of them at Holly’s hands, she made amends. Holly reached behind her and grabbed a brand new pair of full quill ostrich cowboy boots. Top of the line, to impress Dan and his tastes. Dan was very impressed with the boots and gave Holly a hug and forgiving peck for the boots.
Jeff Probst took the opportunity to question Dan about his money. “How much money do you really have?” asked Probst. Dan replied, “I don’t know if the IRS is here... I’m okay.” He then went on to expound on his sons and how great they were. It’s obvious that Dan meant it when he said he did not need the million dollar prize. Which begs the question of why did he go on it at all? I guess only he and Jimmy Johnson know.
Jane, later named winner of America’s Favorite Player for Survivor Nicaragua, was asked how she trained for the show. It was impressive. She asked the producers what she should do, and then she did it. My guess is most would never bother to ask. Jane ran two miles a day and worked out quite a bit. It was obvious in her performance during physical challenges.
Probst also asked her about her feud with Marty. Jane said she’d approached Marty, Tyrone and Jimmy Johnson to form an alliance early and Marty and Tyrone “fluffed” her off. Marty giggled and said he did not remember “fluffing” Jane, but he would not be going to a visit at her house anytime soon.
The much awaited questioning of the outspoken quitter NaOnka was up next. Though she talked a big game before and after quitting Survivor Nicaragua, I actually think NaOnka was embarrassed by her actions and words. She would not apologize for anything, but I would not expect her to do that. After showing her knocking down Kelly B. and talking about taking her prosthetic leg, NaOnka tried to say she was treating her just like any other competitor. Jeff asked her about her teaching career since leaving Survivor Nicaragua. “There have been a few calls from parents that don’t want their kids in my PE class, “admitted NaOnka. When Jeff asked, “Is that really you?” NaOnka said, “I acted a fool.”
To push the NaOnka envelope farther, Jeff Probst went to her mother (Zena) in the audience. Zena was obviously embarrassed by her daughters behavior on national TV. “She did more than I expected... I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” said Zena as she watched the outtakes of NaOnka on the big screens. Jeff Probst’s worst question of the night was him asking Zena if she still loved her daughter. What an ignorant question. Of course she does.
The new rule was announced after a season of quitters. From now on if you quit Survivor the producers will decide if you are part of the jury or not (if it’s that far into the game). Um, the producers will “decide”? Seriously? So if you want to quit, talk someone else into quitting with you so they have to let you on the jury (or the votes may come out in a tie at the end). Or just bring great viewership and they would likely keep you for ratings.
The night came to an uncomfortable stop when Probst attempted to allow Shannon to redeem himself. Shannon left Survivor Nicaragua early after an awkward Tribal Council between he and Sash. In the Tribal, Shannon made remarks that verged on gay bashing toward Sash (who is not gay). He continued to the point that the tribe had no choice but to vote him out unanimously. Read about Shannon’s departure here: Survivor: Nicaragua Shannon Shows His True Colors (and they aren’t rainbow!)
Probst no more than said Shannon’s name than he proved himself ignorant again and had to be cut off. “I was calling a duck a duck.. if it turned into a chicken, that’s his choice” said a babbling Shannon. “I met his girlfriend last night...” said Shannon of Sash. Probst stepped in and shut him down fast in full damage control mode.
In the audience were many past Survivor players, including Boston Rob. Probst asked Boston Rob about the fairytale relationship of he and Amber. Apparently the two have just had their second baby, and we saw pics of the cutie! Amber was not in the audience, but Rob gave plenty of inside info on the rushed birth.
The Survivor Nicaragua reunion ended in the usual fashion, with previews of next season. Yes, there will be a 21st edition of Survivor. The new twist was revealed for Survivor Redemption Island. When a castaway is voted out of a tribe they must go to Redemption Island. When the next castaway is evicted, they too will head to Redemtion Island to face off with the last castaway in a competition. Whoever wins the competition gets to stay on Redemption Island and fight again, the loser goes home. Whomever is left on Redemption Island will get to rejoin the rest of the Survivor players late in the game (without them knowing who is rejoining). That should be fun. I hope the cast is better.
