American Idol 10: James Durbin Revisits Heavy Metal, Casey Brings the Jazz

American Idol: 10th Anniversary - The Hits Volume 1The night was dedicated to music in the movies this week on American Idol 10, but first… let’s honor Jlo for being named “Most Beautiful Woman in the World” by People Magazine. M’kay, awkward moment while a spotlight falls on JLO and an old recording is played of “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.”  The prelude should have been Ryan Seacrest saying, “and now for something completely different.” Finally we got to the music. It was a bit of a sleepy night until the end.

Paul McDonald - “Old Time Rock & Roll” by Bob Seger
Wearing what Ryan described as “Nash-Vegas” style, Paul went with a black rose covered suit this week. He did not play guitar and did not slide out in his underwear. I was already bummed. He did beat a tambourine to death during the song and that helped with his distracting dance moves. Performing in the fatally first spot may be the end for Paul McDonald, but I hope not. I still like him and he sounded good, even if the band sort of sucked or sounded muffled. The judges loved everything about tonight so no need to quote. Ryan advised , “If you like sax with Paul” that you’d better vote for him.

Lauren Alaina - “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus
News flash: Jimmy Iovine says Lauren Alaina has a better voice than Myley Cyrus…. Thank you Captain Obvious. It was a good choice for Alaina and she sang it way better than Miley ever has. Sorry Miley fans, but she’s not good live. Lauren sang it with feeling and ended it strong. She was a little nasally in the beginning and middle. At least it was a young girl singing a young song. Well done.

Stefano Langone - “End of the Road” by Boys II Men
Note to Stefano, never sing a song that may foretell your future on the Idol stage. At least they don’t have to sing their good-bye song anymore. Actually I thought Stefano sounded good tonight, but he needs a stage coach. He was dressed like a guy in a karaoke bar, so it makes it hard to take him seriously. Had he come out in a black leather jacket and dark sunglasses that he rips off somewhere during a build up in the song…now that would be a performance. Right now he’s *yawn* Stefano.

Scotty McCreery - “Cross My Heart” by George Strait
Scotty was going to do “Everybody’s Talking at Me,” but went with the safer George Strait song instead. Both sounded good in audition. Let’s face it, Scotty has a great voice and will be a big country star. Please some one teach this child how to hold a microphone in a less creepy way though. It’s really getting annoying.

Casey Abrams - “Nature Boy” by Nat King Cole
I’m not being harsh on Casey tonight for playing a jazz tune that no one knows. However, I am being harsh on his performance when he literally coughed into the mic at one point (not a growl, he cleared his throat). You have to be professional. Turn your head. He looked nervous and sounded very nervous. He did scat well and I knew he could, but he still sounded nervous. I don’t think this was the stage for Casey’s jazz performance. The judges gave it a standing ovation. He nearly got sick from the excitement of their approval. I still think it was only okay on the Casey Abrams’ level of performances.

Haley Reinhart - “Call Me” by Blondie
And then there’s Haley… how is Haley still on AI and Pia is watching somewhere? Vocally speaking, of course. Neither have much stage presence, though Haley tries very hard. She tries too hard for the most part. Tonight was no different. Reinhart delivered a performance you can see at any theme park or on a cruise ship. Sorry Haley fans. I want her to sing something she really feels.

Jacob Lusk - “Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel
Jimmy Iovine put Jacob right in his Idol hopeful spot early this week by calling him “stool man” and informing Jacob that he should not preach to the audience before he’s even  released a record. Got that out of the way, Iovine then assigned Lusk the song he sang. Sorry Jacob, you did well tonight, but that song remains a Clay Aiken anthem on American Idol for me. Jacob did belt out the last 20 seconds as only he can.

James Durbin - “Heavy Metal” by Sammy Hagar
The mentors tried to tell James to be careful, but he can’t afford to be careful. In the closing position tonight Durbin brought the house down with the classic metal hit. The guy makes me proud to have gone to those Motley Crue concerts in the 80’s. You feel tired after a James Durbin performance, which is just the way it should be after a concert.

The judges were in love with every performance except for Haley Reinhart’s. Randy said it sounded karaoke to him. Jlo let it slip that she hated to say anything bad about the girls (only 2 left on Idol 10), but she had to admit to agreeing with Randy.

My picks for bottom three tomorrow based strictly on tonight’s performances: Haley Reinhart, Stefano Langone and Casey Abrams (sorry dude, I just didn’t like it). I only hope I’m wrong on Casey, but if I am it will likely be Paul McDonald joining the other two and I don’t like that any better. I hope Haley or Stefano go home this week.
