Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley's Tribute To Eddie Arnold

Academy of Country Music Awards
CBS Sunday 8/7c 5/18/08

Let me start by saying that I am not a country music fan, I only know Reba McIntyre from her TV show (which is hysterical). So I'm coming into this not knowing much about the people involved. All in all, I must say it was reasonably enjoyable.

Reba started things off with a politically incorrect, at times, monologue that only she can get away with. It's like listening to your mom tell an almost dirty joke. She seems so innocent about it.

At this time Reba announced that the winner of Entertainer of the Year would be voted on throughout the telecast and announced at the end. Each performer or band would perform during the show so it's fair, I guess.

All of the nominees for Entertainer of the Year were really good; George Strait, Rascal Flats, Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban.

My personal favorites are George Strait and Trace Atkins. George Strait, because he represents old country, and he was my mom's favorite. Trace (I don't think he is up for any big awards tonight), because I love his voice, and heard of him for the first time on
Celebrity Apprentice.

Garth Brooks put on quite a half-time show with a medley of his hits including; The Thunder Rolls, The Dance, We Shall Be Free, Friends In Low Places, Ain't Go Down Till The Sun Comes Up. Garth is the ultimate performer and ham, he obviously feeds off the audience. After a shaky beginning, sort of losing the word, we were in for a treat in the usual Garth Brooks showmanship fashion.

The most touching moment of the night came when the Country Music Academy bid a fond farewell to Eddie Arnold, who passed away this year. Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley, who later coincidentally would win Male and Female Vocalist of the Year award, sang a tribute to the country music pioneer. Underwood was dressed beautifully, with hair and make-up a throw back to the Lorretta Lynn days. The sounded magical singing Arnold's legendary song, Make The World Go Away.
