Surviving Survivor: A CBS Recap Before Heroes Vs. Villains Kicks Off

Next week starts the 20th season (and 10th year) of the hit CBS reality TV show Survivor. This season will be another all-stars game titled Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains. There has been fair share of both on the show over the years.

Richard Hatch, straight out of federal prison for tax evasion after winning the million dollar prize in the first season of Survivor, is the ultimate Villain. The one guy that set the standard for mind games for every season of the game. Richard "Naked Ass" Hatch approached the game like a bully in a schoolyard. It paid off big for him, no other players even knew how to react to his antics. I actually think he's pretty funny and was glad he won.

Arguing for his place in hell... er, Survivor history, is Russell "Evil Russell" Hanz. Last season's Lucifer and truly the most arrogant person I've ever heard speak. He is so egotistical it makes me giggle. Maybe that's part of the game. Russell Hanz stood over Richard Hatch until the final scenes of Surviving Survivor, when Hatch stood up to show the Hanz did not even come to his shoulders (not even close). I almost fell down laughing. Evil Russell said he is still the greatest Survivor player ever, Richard finished "that never won." Though producer made us think the devils would face each other, it's not to be. Hatch applied for early release from home confinement on his tax evasion sentence and was denied.

If Russell Hanz and Richard Hatch are the devil incarnate, then Tom Westman is an angel. The winner of Survivor: Palou (hands down) played such a good and decent game that it was horribly boring to watch. Week after week, Tom Westman kept promises and continually won individual immunity. It almost destroyed Survivor in the ratings.

Then there was Ruppert Boneham. No one knew what to think about this giant pirate (he really looked like a pirate). Ruppert stole the opposing teams shoes on day one...hmm, good guy or bad guy. He proved himself a loyal player in the game, and genuine good guy outside the game of Survivor. Ruppert Boneham never won the game of Survivor, but he did win $1million dollars as America's Favorite Survivor Player after the last All-stars game. He took it and started a program for inner-city youths, www.rupertskids.org .

We caught up with Jenna and Ethan, the original Survivor couple still together. Ethan was the winner of Survivor: Africa, Jenna won Survivor: Amazon. Money can't buy everything. A lesson this couple knows all too well. Ethan lost his father to Cancer as a teen. We all saw Jenna leave the All-stars game to be with her mom before she passed. Now it seems Ethan has been struck by a rare form of Lymphoma. He has undergone stem cell treatments. Man, they deserve a break. Get well soon Ethan!
