Last Comic Standing: Roy Wood Jr., Myq Kaplan and Tommy Johnagin Advance

Tonight only saw the exit of one comic on Last Comic Standing. I was sort of hoping another three would get the axe and we might see longer sets for the finals. Alas, there is too much time for NBC to fill up in the summer. I do think it's nice to have a pure comic show in prime time. Any publicity is good publicity.

Craig Robinson is getting on my nerves. There I said it. Let's get on with it.

Jonathan Thymius was the first comedian called to perform. Surely they were not being called out in order of votes... or votefortheworst.com is backing Jonathan heavily. I actually really liked his set the first time. Last week was just boring. This week was boring, then uncomfortable, then back to boring. I think Jonathan Thymius has peaked on this show. The comics did an intro clip tonight and even that was forgettable.

Roy Wood Jr. was announced as the next comic to perform. Roy had a great set again tonight. He spoke of the infamous "Nugget Coalition" forming to fight the KKK and their nugget conspiracy. The only thing wrong with the set was that it was too funny for the short segment. I was still laughing so hard at the first bit that I missed nearly all of the rest. That's a back-handed compliment. Roy Wood Jr. is one of my favorites to win Last Comic Standing. Wood's intro was funny featuring him trying to fit his mom with a sling so the voting public would think she was "crippled" and he would get the sympathy votes. She explained to him that he was mentally "crippled" enough to get that vote on his own.

Thankfully Myq Kaplan's name was announced next. I really think he should go for it and change his name to Myq Qaplan, just an idea. Anyway, Kaplan was hilarious from intro to end as usual. His intro was a song ("I Do Comedy" ?) with the phrase, "I stalk and kill former lovers..." Seriously, the guy is funny. He said he wanted to see reality TV shows combined like, "Kid's Say the Darnedest Things When Animals Attack". I hope I'm not painting the wrong picture of Myq Kaplan for you, I swear he's not the angry comedian guy.

Tommy Johnagin was called out for his set. Johnagin had more success tonight on the LCS stage. His intro showed him as the typical American "shucking corn over a flag, wearing a wife-beater". His set tonight was on the scares of unplanned pregnancy. Really more educational... don't call the kids to watch. "I had a pregnancy scare recently. Actually, she had the pregnancy scare, I just thought I had to move." He's a funny guy, this is a good show for him. Go figure.

I almost hoped LCS was over for the night when Mike Destefano's name was called to perform. Last week Destefano had a rough set. He made up for it this week. Back to the angry guy from the Bronx, and it just works for him. He said his mom wanted him to do public service work for kids to speak of the ills of drug use. "What do you want me to say? Kids... I did heroin, which feels like a pool of puppies... then I went to rehab, and now I'm on TV... sorry it worked out for me!"

At this point I was struggling to stay tuned for another comic. The only two left were Rachel Feinstein and Filipe Esparza.

Filipe won the coin flip tonight evidently, and we were not treated to another grandmother impression by Rachel Feinstein. Buh-bye Rachel. Please take the female judge with you on the way out!

Felipe is a pretty funny guy, he's just hard to understand. It's not the accent, unless 'slurred' is an accent now. He had a better set tonight than he had last week (I think, maybe I just had more to drink this week). Maybe that's it, there is an alcohol cover charge for Esparza's humor. I still don't want to see him in the LCS finals (neither does my liver).

That's it for this week on Last Comic Standing. My picks for the final three remain Roy Wood Jr., Myq Kaplan and Tommy Johnagin. As long as those guys make the finals I won't care which wins. They are all great comedians.
