Review of “The Event”: A “Lost” Rip Off or the Real Thing?

My rating: Give it a week or two more

It was clear to some “Lost” fans that NBC’s new show, “The Event”, was a rip off. I was never a fan of “Lost”, so I continued to watch. The difference to me was the time flipping right from the opening scenes. Once it was over, it was  a little less confusing... a little.

The timeline seems to have started eight days ago, not so hard to follow. The problem is that it was first ‘a few minutes ago’, then ‘eight days ago’, then ‘a week ago next Sunday’. OK, that last one was not part of it, but it was about that bad. Just tell us what is going on. At least there were no split scenes, yet.

Here is what we know so far about “The Event”:

1. Eight days ago Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) and his girlfriend Leila (Sarah Roemer) were a happy young couple in love and on a cruise. Sean is about to propose, after asking Leila’s father’s permission. Leila goes missing during the cruise, and no record of Sean Walker is left on the cruise registry.

2. Leila’s father Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) is a commercial pilot. His youngest daughter goes outside in the rain, and is kidnapped. His wife is then shot.

3. There is a group of detainees (led by Sophia Maguire [Laura Innes]) that are about to be released from a government detention center by the President of the United States (Blair Underwood). He is releasing them against the recommendations of his top advisers and the CIA.

4. There is an assassination attempt on the President. The plan was to fly a plane into the place he and his family are staying while releasing the prisoners. We see Sean Walker on the plane attempting to enter the cockpit when stopped by an air marshal. A gunshot rings out from the cockpit and the plane swerves violently in the air. The air marshal allows Sean to call the cockpit, where we see now that the pilot is ...Michael Buchanan, Leila’s father and Sean’s soon to be father-in-law.

5. As the plane comes in bearing straight for the President’s party... it disappears into some sort of wormhole. Yup. I know. Sophia, the head detainee watched the happening (since NBC swears that was not ‘The Event’), and says, “They saved us.” The President asks “Who?” and she replies, "I haven't told you everything." Really?

.... please don’t be aliens, please don’t be aliens.

I’m going to say I’m still on the fence about “The Event”. I will definitely give it one more shot next Monday, but if it’s aliens I think I’m done. From the previews we see Sean Walker, from the plane, waking up in a hospital (alternate reality?).

There seemed to be a love/hate reception on Twitter for “The Event”. Both #BlairUnderwood and #TheEvent were trending during the show, that’s a good sign. It’s hard to get into a show this twisted without knowing if it will be on long enough to tell us what the heck the actual point is. One thing about it, if you are going to watch “The Event”, you have to actually watch it... like every second.

Did you watch “The Event”? What did you think... will you watch it again next week?
