American Idol 10: Stefano Langone Reaches the End of His Idol Road

Only six contestants are left on American Idol 10 after Stefano Langone was eliminated tonight. David Cook and Katy Perry (with Kenye West) appeared live for performances too. After what has come to be the usual suspects in the bottom three, Stefano was finally let go.

The Idol producers are changing things up every week now for the group performances. First Jacob Lusk, Lauren Alaina, Haley Reinhart and Stefano Langone teamed up for a version of “Hey Soul Sister.” It was only okay at best. It’s hard to sound good with so many high voices at one time. Next came Casey Abrams, James Durbin and Scotty McCreery with their group song, Coldplay‘s “Viva La Vida.” It was only slightly better.

Ryan Seacrest talked to the Idol hopefuls for a moment and we got to see what Casey Abrams got from a fan. A huge painting of him and his dog on a stand up bass. Very nice, even if he couldn’t pronounce the fan’s name.

Casey Abrams and Jacob Lusk were told to stand in position for the announcement of their fates. Ryan Seacrest said to Casey, “Last night you kissed a girl and I think she liked it,” about his smooch with JLo. Then he was told to sit back down on the couch of safety. Jacob Lusk was not as lucky. I don’t think America will ever let Jacob live down his preachy comment from a couple of weeks ago, fair or not. Jacob Lusk was the first person sent to the AI bottom three tonight.

David Cook retook the Idol stage for his triumphant return. Singing his new single from his sophomore album “The Last Good-bye” Cook put on a rock show for his fans. I’ve never been a David Cook fan, but it was a good performance. Cook also introduced his mom in the audience to Steven Tyler, who stood and gave her a hug and a peck on the cheek.

The last five contestants were called out in groups. First were Lauren Alaina, James Durbin and Stefano Langone. Lauren was sent to safety first, though she looked quite worried this week. Next James Durbin was sent to safety, leaving Stefano to join Jacob Lusk in the bottom three.

Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart were the last ones called out by Ryan. Scotty had a bad night last week, but his fan base will not let him slip to the bottom three for a single week. Haley Reinhart, though she’s getting better each week, took her now usual spot on the stools o’ shame. Reinhart did not stay there long, she was sent to safety almost immediately.

Katy Perry was carried onto the Idol stage by a group of large men. Hey, she stole my usual entrance. She also seemed to have gotten into Lady GaGa’s closet for tonight’s performance. Wearing the weirdest outfit since Iggy Pop came out in nearly nothing, Perry lip-synced to a track of "ET". Kenye West joined her on stage, but Ryan never thanked him or mentioned him in any way. Sort of weird.

It was finally time to get down to business. Though it seemed logical that Stefano would go home he’s managed to dodge his share of bullets this season. After the 52 million votes were counted, Stefano finally took a hit. Jacob Lusk may not be far behind him. James Durbin cried at the announcement and ran onto the stage to swoop Stefano off his feet as soon as he finished his Idol swan song.

I’ll go out on a very large limb and say that Scotty McCreery will likely win this season of American Idol. This season may come down to the classic battle of rock versus country. That battle did not turn out well for Bo Bice against Carrie Underwood. James Durbin has my vote, but I’ve never picked a winner. In fact, I’ve managed to pick every second place finisher for nine seasons straight now. Maybe I should back Scotty…

So, what did you think about tonight’s AI elimination? Were you glad Stefano Langone was eliminated or were you hoping for another contestant?
