Zenith: The First TV I Remember

Z to A in May Blogging Challenge

There were not a lot of constants in my early home life. One thing that was always there was our old Zenith console TV set. We likely got it used, but it was color so that didn’t matter. It gave a lot of hours of enjoyment over many years.

I remember the old brown chipped fake wood shell on that console TV. The giant knob to turn the channel. Back then, kids, we didn’t have a remote control, that was for rich people. There was no such thing as cable TV yet either. Yes, I’m old, and so was that Zenith when we got it.

There was only one rule about the TV in our house; my brother and I were not allowed to turn it on before mom got up. That was not really an issue since she was an early riser. There was nothing for kids to watch until Saturdays anyway.

Saturday mornings were the best. Sitting in front of the old Zenith till nearly noon watching our favorite cartoons.

When my mom passed away I was surprised to find out she really liked sports (like me). Many of her yearbook friends from school had inscribed them with thoughts on different sports she played or liked. When I think back about watching TV with her growing up, we did watch a lot of sports. Surprisingly golf and bowling. I thought it was because they were quiet and she could grab a nap during them, but I think she really enjoyed them too.

See, the TV set does not have to be a family distraction. In fact, it can be a place to bond or find out something about someone. Pay attention to more than just the set while you watch with loved ones. Interact while watching the shows, or at least during commercials.

TV gets a bad rap sometimes, but I enjoyed the time spent watching old movies and sporting events and even the news with my mom growing up. By the time we got a new TV we were using channel lock pliers to turn the knob (after the original fell off). It had served more than it’s purpose.

  1. I don't remember if ours was a Zenith, but it too, was old. Oh gosh, it was eons before remote controls came into play and I remember thinking how only lazy people would use them. I didn't, at first.

Funny how things grow on ya, isn't it?
