I like Nate Berkus, however, I was not pleased that "The Bonnie Hunt Show" would be replaced by "The Nate Berkus Show" this fall. I boycotted watching the first few episodes out of my (unknown) allegiance to Bonnie Hunt.
Today I caught the full episode of Nate's new afternoon show. Oprah Winfrey has started another successful career, it appears. The show is based on interior design, of course, with a mix of guests joining in on stage. Sort of a mix of "Oprah" meets "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition".
It works. Nate Berkus is a likable guy, and many of us cried with him over the loss of his partner in the tsunami in SE Asia a few years ago. The thought that we came so close to losing Nate is scary.
The day I chose to tune in (without knowing the schedule) turned out to be a real tear-jerker. In the style of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition", Nate took on the challenge of finishing a nursery for a father of newly born twins. The family already had two young sons, and the mother ran into complications and died after giving birth to the twins. Dad and kids had moved in with his family for help since the nursery was not finished. Nate Berkus and his team to the rescue!
The family was from Kentucky, so Dolly Parton got involved as well. There is nothing as heart wrenching as to hear Dolly Parton sing "I Will Always Love You" to a family grieving the loss of a mom. She is a class act.
The time placement in the Midwest is perfect for the show. Taking the 2pm CT slot on NBC, it's nice to have a family friendly show in the afternoon for non-cable TV watchers like myself. So turn off the Maury "baby daddy" Povich show and turn on Nate Berkus. You might learn something too!
