Premiere of Blue Bloods on CBS: Intriguing Family Cop Drama

Police Interceptor of the New York City Police...Image via Wikipedia
Finally we got to watch the full premiere of Blue Bloods on CBS. The drama is centered around the Reagan family of cops (and a prosecutor) in New York. It’s almost stereotypical of the NYC police dramas, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) plays the father, with two cop sons and a prosecutor daughter. One son was recently killed, apparently while working covertly for the police department.

The show works, even though I think they tried to fit too much background into the first hour. It was nice to be all caught up, but if you plan this much depth to the storyline we might need more than one episode to get to know the players.

Oldest son, Danny Reagan (Donny Wahlberg), is a detective on the edge. We see right from the beginning he is willing to do anything to get the bad guy. There was also a reference to what happened to him in Iraq. This after he is seen water boarding a kidnapper to get a confession and location of the girl.

Danny and sister/prosecutor, Erin Reagan-Boyle (Bridget Moynahan), argue at the Sunday dinner table over the rights and wrongs of the justice system.

There was an intriguing twist tonight when a covert police inner investigation team approached youngest son and new officer, Jamie Reagan (Will Estes). It seemed a little oddly placed in the first episode, but should give a decent side story to Blue Bloods.

I think Blue Bloods is worth watching a few more times despite it’s overbearing attempts to make us understand its obvious messages. They actually play violin music every time Selleck talks seriously to one of his sons. Hopefully it will get past a few opening season jitters and improve for a longer run. I really want to like it, and all the actors seem to fit in the roles well.

Did you watch Blue Bloods tonight? What did you think?
