Jackie Evancho Finishes in Second Place

The America's Got Talent 2010 finale night was a bit shocking, and of course, overly dramatic and drawn out. In the end there could only be one winner, and that turned out to be Mississippi singer Michael Grimm. I was more than a little surprised. The singing phenom Jackie Evancho had to settle for second place. Both will be stars, I'm sure.
The fluff filling for the two hour show included a final performance from each of the final four contestants with their idol. The acts didn't seem to get the memo on that part though, as all were excited to find out who their idols were.
Prince Poppycock was paired up with Donna Summer. I can see that. It was a good performance from Poppycock and may have won him the contest had he done it last night. Summers looked beautiful, but seemed a little uncomfortable. She had warned Prince Poppycock not to upstage her, maybe she felt he did.
Michael Grimm paired up with his "idol", Jewel. Really? I was beginning to feel taken. They sang "Me and Bobby McGee", which sounded weird with a guy singing lead through the beginning. Michael Grimm definitely sounded great, he always does. It's not that I don't like him or think he's talented, but why has he had so much trouble getting discovered? Anyway, Grimm out-sung Jewel by a mile on this one.
Who do you pair with Fighting Gravity? Lionel Richie, king of dancing on the ceiling. I think Fighting Gravity kind of got ripped on this one. They were set far behind Richie (may have been a video) and only clipped to on instrumental breaks. Lionel Richie was the best of the celebrity performances though. He's still got it.
Young Jackie Evancho was matched up with opera great Sarah Brightman. I'll admit right now that I've never heard Brightman sing before tonight. I was underwhelmed. She seemed to be straining to prove how much better she was than Evancho. I believe she normally is, I don't really know. Tonight's performance belonged to Jackie Evancho (to my silly ears). Sarah Brightman did recommend to Jackie that she save her voice.
As Nick Cannon finally started producing results, an upset was definitely brewing. Prince Poppycock was eliminated first in fourth place. I was not that surprised after last night's serious (read boring) performance. He's also a little out of the core voting group of tweens and teens. Poppycock took it like the star he will surely become.
The real shock started when Fighting Gravity was called out in third place. I really thought they would rule the young voting crowd. I also thought they were Jackie Evancho's biggest threat to win AGT 2010.
I got the same weird feeling I had when Kris Allen faced off against Adam Lambert on American Idol. The clear season leader was about to go down in second. Not that second place is anything to yawn at, just ask Adam Lambert.
Prince Poppycock will no doubt show up in Vegas all by himself... and his other self. There is a show waiting for him to take charge somewhere.
The VA Tech boys in Fighting Gravity can make some real life decisions now. To sell the act and go back to college, or try their hands at show business. It might be wash, some brilliant minds came up with this act.
What is left to say for Jackie Evancho? I hope to hear her in Carnegie Hall one day, or at least see it on TV. She knows she is gifted and seems grounded with her family. Jackie has the biggest future of them all.
Michael Grimm looked as shocked as anyone at being crowned winner of America's Got Talent season 5. I hope he does well. Grimm has an incredible voice and it's finally his time.
